Start with this shot of CalMac’s Caledonian Isles, in Cammell Laird’s No 4 dock on the Mersey for her annual refit – her first at Lairds. She looks a perfectly normal ferry.
Then do the ‘Go compare’ bit with the whale next door in No 5 dock – Irish Sea Ferries’ Ulysses.
Ulysses is the largest car ferry in the world. She can carry 1342 cars and 2000 passengers. She has a two-screen cinema on board as well as the welter of facilities you’d expect to serve that number of people. She runs the route from Holyhead to Dublin.
Check out her tiny bow. It could almost be her stern. This is down to my using a wide angle lens just to get her into the shot.
Have a look at Google Maps to see the size of No 5 dock – and Ulysses takes up most of it.
